What is the dividend yield of the S&P 500?

The current dividend yield of the S&P 500 is estimated at 1.17% percent. This estimate is calculated by dividing the total dividends paid per share over the past twelve months by the current price of the S&P 500 index. We update this estimate every day at market close to reflect the latest share price. This ensures that users get the most accurate estimate possible. Other rates, such as the averages and previous years dividend yields, are not estimates. These values are calculated by using the actual dividend yields for each year and then averaging the real dividend yields.

What is a stock's dividend yield?

A stock’s dividend yield measures the annual dividends a company pays relative to its current share price, expressed as a percentage. It represents the income an investor could earn from a stock if they bought it at its current price. This is attractive to investors as it creates a steady stream of passive income without needing to sell any shares of stock. However, stocks which offer a high dividend yield, a yield above 4 percent is considered high, is seen as more risky. Usually, a safe stock will offer a yield in the range of 1 to 3 percent dividend yield per year.
